The test you can do right now

Wash your car, dry it, then slide your fingertips across the hood. Smooth glass means clean paint. If it feels like fine sandpaper, your clear coat is holding bonded contamination — industrial fallout, brake dust, rail dust, tree sap mist, and the mineral deposits our hard water leaves behind.

That layer doesn't come off with soap because it isn't sitting on the paint, it's embedded in it. It also scatters light, which is why a freshly washed car can still look flat and dull.

Where this sits between a wash and a coating

Think of it as the middle tier. A wash cleans the surface. A ceramic coating is a multi-year, chemically bonded shield that costs accordingly. Clay and seal is the sweet spot in between: your paint gets genuinely decontaminated, then protected by a sealant that holds up for months rather than the weeks you'd get from wax.

It's also the right call before a coating — since a coating locks in whatever is underneath it, the paint has to be truly clean first.
